The Johnson Collection: A Private Collection for Public Good

For the Johnson Collection, the stewardship of art is a philanthropic endeavor.

Established and fully funded by Susu and George Johnson, TJC exists to share the lives and legacies that form the foundation of Southern art. Recently spotlighted by Forbes as a place to discover “The World’s Greatest Modern Art Where You Least Expect To Find It,” the collection is committed to enhancing the cultural vibrancy of its city, state, and region.

Currently comprised of 1,200 objects, TJC maintains a presence in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and beyond through touring exhibitions and generous loans of individual works. To make Southern art accessible to all, works are shared at no fee, reaching over 1.5 million visitors and providing a source of revenue to partner museums. By participating in efforts like the U.S. Department of State’s Art in Embassies program, TJC joins a cross-cultural dialogue and helps foster a mutual understanding through visual art.

Located in the heart of Spartanburg’s lively downtown, TJC Gallery offers curated exhibitions and diverse community programming for a wide range of ages. Gallery talks led by scholars and art experts provide fresh perspectives, and programs for children encourage hands-on creativity and an early appreciation of art.

TJC Gallery welcome you to view their collection and enjoy a unique and vibrant experience. The gallery is currently open and admission is free to the public. You can also explore museum collections through virtual tours, activities, and lectures from across the globe by visiting thejohnsoncollection.org.
