As we near year-end, many of us are wrapping up projects and planning for 2020 strategic goals. In addition to mapping priorities and looking ahead to corporate performance, it is also a time to evaluate professional performance with the Annual Performance Review Process.

Performance reviews are a key part of our performance management process and help to reinforce our Guiding Principles. They offer a time to reflect on what went well this year and to take ownership of opportunities to improve. These types of constructive conversations are vital, not just to ongoing development, but also for finding fulfillment in our roles. All team members need timely, specific, and helpful feedback to reach their full potential. Feedback helps build confidence, clarifies expectations, and allows each of us to learn from mistakes.

We are all challenged to strive for continuous improvement, and to do so, we must hold ourselves accountable for growing professionally, which means we also need to be receptive to feedback and embrace opportunities to develop skills in new and different ways.

The key to a productive review is collaboration between leaders and team members. To achieve this, you should actively participate in the conversation to ensure you leave with clear direction.

As you write your self-assessment and prepare for a conversation with your leader, it’s important to connect your past performance with your opportunities for growth and development in the future. Performance Review conversations are meant to position each of us for a robust start to 2020 – one that will allow all of us to find fulfillment in our roles.

We encourage you to reach out to your HR business partners and use us as a resource for questions, concerns, and support as you begin this important process and wrap up the year.

The following tips can be used when preparing for your upcoming performance review

Reflect on the Year Document the stories of how your actions impacted the business or made a positive impression on a teammate, customer or partner.

Connect with the Guiding Principles Connect your individual experiences with our Guiding Principles. Explain how you have demonstrated the Guiding Principles, and have the humility to share the times when things didn’t go as planned.

Focus on Improvement Identify at least one thing that you are going to focus on to improve professionally.
