A Springboard for Success: The Johnson Group Intern Program

The Johnson Group 2020 Interns

Each summer, The Johnson Group looks forward to welcoming a group of bright, driven college students to our team. Though this summer looked a little different, the 26 students from 12 different colleges who joined this year’s intern program rivaled even the best rosters from years’ past.

Through the internship program, we have created a pipeline of talent for future full-time roles within The Johnson Group. Since formalizing the program in Summer 2018, 75 students have participated in our internship program, with nearly 55 percent of those being offered full-time positions.

The internship experience offered by JDA, OTO, and ACA focuses on giving students real life experiences and empowers them to contribute to business goals in a meaningful way. Hear what this summer’s interns had to say about their experience working with The Johnson Group:

"I have been lucky enough to look forward to coming into work every day, and that is because of the people I am with. The ACA team knows how to get it done, but also how to have fun while doing it. From someone coming from out-of-state who knew nobody coming into the company, I quickly felt welcome at ACA and made great connections with the team."

"I have enjoyed the people at JDA most of all. Everyone is always willing to answer a question or explain something that I might not initially understand after doing my own digging. It feels like we are one big team so one person’s win is an all-around win."

"Through my internship at ACA, I’ve learned how to better work in an organized manner and break up a huge task into smaller daily tasks to achieve your goal and also to enjoy the process of it."

"While being a finance intern during these unprecedented times, I have seen the adversities OTO is working through, that in normal circumstances would not be an everyday occurrence. However, I am blown away with how the company operates as a unit, facing challenges head-on daily. They embody the idea that success is not a straight line, and without a shadow of a doubt, success is a team sport. These fundamental ideas that I have witnessed and experienced are such valuable principles to carry throughout my career."

"One thing that I have learned throughout my internship with JDA this summer would be that one should never be afraid to ask questions. Asking questions regularly has enabled me to understand much more than I thought was possible in such a short period of time. Also, total immersion into a new field allows for quick learning and forces adaptation and personal development."

"The most important thing I have learned during my internship is how valuable it is to be working with the right people. Working for a company that conducts themselves in the proper way and not cutting corners by taking the easy way out, which I have seen in several instances in my short time with JDA, is the company you want to be with in the long-term. I am a firm believer in the statement “you are only as strong as your weakest link.” JDA expects the best out of its employees and, in turn, creates a culture with no “weak links"."

"I knew I was interested in the hotel industry before but after this internship, I realize that I have a burning passion for the hotel industry. Honestly, I can talk on and on about the reasons my internship with OTO Development has been one of the best experiences in my life. At the end of the day, I think it truly boils down to the people I have worked with. Although I am only an intern, I truly feel like I am part of the family here in OTO Development."

"What I find most valuable in this specific role at OTO is the intersection between working in the office and working with people. I have learned it would be nearly impossible to carry out the construction process without the ability to wear multiple hats, from talking to the county on certain regulations, negotiating the initial contract with architects and contractors, and much more."
